Weather / Climate Gran Canaria

The “Island of Eternal Spring” …

Insel des ewigen FrühlingsIsland of eternal spring … this is what Gran Canaria is often called, although the climate is more like that of an early summer.
The climate of Gran Canaria is very pleasant all year round. Even in midsummer it is not oppressively hot. A constantly blowing wind makes it possible. The south of the island with the big tourist resorts has a very dry climate with many hours of sunshine and only a few rainy days.
For summer lovers, Gran Canaria is one of the best holiday destinations ever. Temperatures between 21 and 27 ° C prevail on the island throughout the year. January is the coldest month with an average of 21 ° C, October with an average of 27 ° C the warmest month. At night it only gets colder by a minimum of 4 degrees.
The water has an average temperature of 20 ° C, in summer even 25 ° C and thus invites you to swim. So if you like to swim in the sea at Christmas or Easter, Gran Canaria has found the perfect holiday destination.

For many, who are tired of the gloomy weather in autumn, Gran Canaria is therefore a paradise. Unfortunately, the island also has a strong drought, as it rains in many parts only a few days a year. Through a central mountains, the island is divided into 2 parts. The north side of the island receives enough water through the moisturizing clouds and the trade winds, the south side, however, not because the clouds accumulate on the mountains and the other half of the island can not reach. Therefore, the climate differences on the island are enormous – while it can be very cold on one side of the island, on the other side of the island it can be very tropical with high temperatures. Nonetheless, even in the “winter” there is snow on the peaks of the mountains. Sometimes it happens that the island is visited by sandy winds, which last but usually only 3-4 days. Over time, the air gets pretty dry, but at up to 40 ° C it gets very warm. The humidity is then only 30%.

The weather in the Canary Islands ensures a certain well-being

Boote im HafenBoats in the harbor For decades now, the Canary Islands have been one of the number one tourist destinations, and of course they are not unjustified, as they are characterized by the year-round warm and mild climate and the very mild but changeable Canary weather.

The Canary Islands are characterized by an oceanic-subtropical climate with mild winter and temperate summer, which is not too hot thanks to the north current of the ocean. On the islands, the temperature is not evenly distributed: in the south, it is warmer on an annual average than in the north, which is exposed to the relatively strong wind. Here the number of sunny days is higher. With increasing sea level, the temperature also decreases. The close to the sea Gegen are rather predictable and are subject to little fluctuation, which should not go out in the other regions. From time to time the weather in July and August is determined by three to four day heat waves from the Sahara. Then even temperatures of well over 30 ° C can be reached.

The day length on Gran Canaria does not fluctuate so much between summer and winter as in Central Europe. The longest day in summer lasts about 14 hours, the shortest in winter still 11 hours. However, the time of dusk is very short. The Canaries are also called “The Islands of Eternal Spring”, which of course is due to the fabulous temperatures and the always sunny, mild weather.

The temperature in the Canaries is good for the health, the dry air is good for the lungs and the bronchi. Even with joint problems and rheumatism these temperatures are only recommended. Although it is very mild in the Canaries (14-20 degrees) even in winter, but it is felt, due to the wind, mostly a few degrees colder. Here are some details of the individual months: In January, the temperature is between 14 ° C and 21 ° C, even in February and in March, the temperatures are similar. In April and May, it gets a bit warmer at 16 ° C to 23 ° C, and June, July and August are even warmer. September is the warmest month of the year, at 23 ° C – 27 ° C. In October, November and December the temperatures are about the same as those in January and February.
